“Needs to be offloaded”, “Get out of my club” - Chelsea fans blast 23-year-old star despite 1-0 win against Bournemouth
Despite securing all three points against Bournemouth in the Premier League, Chelsea fans were dissatisfied with Wesley Fofana's performance. The Blues earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, September 14.
Christopher Nkunku was the star of the day as he came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 86th minute. The former RB Leipzig man teed up with new signing Jadon Sancho to seal a second league victory for the Blues this campaign.
The hosts had the opportunity to take the lead in the first half after Fofana gave a back pass that led to Robert Sanchez conceding a penalty. However, the shot-stopper redeemed himself by saving Evanilson's shot from 12 yards out to keep his side in the contest. The game looked to be heading for a stalemate before Nkunku delivered the winner.
Fofana had a passing accuracy of 94% (87/93), created a chance, and won five out of seven duels. Still, fans were not impressed as they took to X (formerly Twitter) to blast the 23-year-old defender. Check out some of the reactions below:
"Chelsea have to do major business in January; or we're battling relegation. Fofana and Disasi need to be offloaded. We need an experienced CB. Then Ugochukwu needs to be recalled," a fan wrote.
"Wesley Fofana get out of my club," another one chimed in.
Another fan wrote:
"Fofana spent the international break talking about how he considered offers from Marseille and still loves them despite giving us absolute trash for two years. Causes a penalty today. £80m. Embarrassing."
A fan posted:
"Caicedo and Fofana aren’t Chelsea standard tbh."
"Just a reminder that Fofana cost Chelsea €88m," a fan wrote, reiterating how much the Blues splashed to get the French defender.
"Finally Fofana at RB, god awful as CCB," another fan chimed in.
"Fofana is poor. Chelsea need a better defender to partner Colwill." another fan added.
"I have the utmost confidence that a back two of current Fofana and Badiashille would get us relegated," wrote another fan.
"Fofana out of Chelsea is the best," yet another fan commented.
Premier League record broken as Chelsea beat Bournemouth
Chelsea and Bournemouth have set a new record for most yellow cards in a single game after their Premier League clash on Saturday, September 14. Referee Anthony Taylor dished out 14 yellow cards between the sides.
Eight of these bookings went to the Blues, while the Cherries saw six of their players getting booked. Manager Enzo Maresca was also shown a yellow card for his actions on the touchline.
With this victory, the London club moved into seventh position on the league standings. They will next play West Ham United on Saturday (September 21).
