Nigeria defender reveals moment of Lionel Messi magic that contributed to his decision to play for the Super Eagles

Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey recently described how one of Lionel Messi's magical moments on the pitch inspired him to play for the Super Eagles. Bassey was referring to the legendary Argentine's iconic goal against Nigeria in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Calvin Bassey has been brought up in England but was born to Nigerian parents in Italy. Therefore, the defender had a chance to represent either of the three countries internationally. However, Bassey chose to play for Nigeria after watching Lionel Messi's iconic right-footed goal against the Eagles in their 2-1 win in the 2018 World Cup group stage.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Bassey recalled the moment of Messi's magic that inspired him to play for his country, saying (via Afrik-Foot):

“When Nigeria played Argentina, they lost 2-1 but it was a good game. Messi, of course – Messi is Messi innit – he scored that outrageous goal. I think it was knee, foot, then right foot. It was top. But that was more of motivation to me to want to play for Nigeria and also play on the big stage.”

Although Messi's goal vs Nigeria in the 2018 World Cup was not one of his most significant ones, it can be seen as one of his most beautiful ones. The Argentine legend received a beautifully delivered long ball by Ever Banega which touched his left knee before hitting the left foot. He then dribbled past the Nigerian defense, before finding the left corner of the net with a right-footed shot (14').

Nigeria equalized courtesy of a Victor Moses penalty (51') but Marcos Rojo's goal (86') led La Albiceleste to a much-needed 2-1 win. Argentina stood second in their group and qualified for the knockout stages.

However, they bowed out of the tournament after a 4-3 loss to France in the round of 16. Lionel Messi went on to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

At the age of 37, Lionel Messi is currently at the twilight of his career having achieved everything in football. However, fans worldwide continue to be in awe of La Pulga's magic on the pitch, hoping to see him continue at the highest stage for some more time.

Shortly after receiving the MARCA America Award earlier this month, the Argentine superstar spoke about playing for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup. He said (via ESPN):

"In the moment, we will see. (...) When I get to do what I love, I am happy. I value that more than reaching the 2026 tournament. I haven't set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more so to live day-to-day and be well."

In 2026, Lionel Messi will be 39 years of age. The former Barcelona superstar has been in great form for MLS side Inter Miami, leading them to win the 2024 Supporters' Shield this month. He has also been lethal for Argentina and scored a hat-trick in their last 6-0 World Cup qualifier win against Bolivia (October 15).
