Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responds after being asked if he would like a managerial return to Manchester UnitedÂ
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he is open to a return to Old Trafford if the opportunity presents itself. The 51-year-old Norweigan coach has been in between jobs since leaving the Red Devils in 2021.
Solskjaer was hired by United in 2018 as caretaker manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho. After a string of positive results, he was handed the job on a full-time basis.
During his first few seasons at Old Trafford, the Norwegian managed some notable successes such as a second-place league finish and a Europa League runners-up in the 2022-21 season. However, United suffered a massive dip in performance in the first half of the 2021-22 season which led to the club parting ways with Solskjaer. Since then, he has not picked up any managerial duties.
When asked in a recent interview if he would accept a managerial comeback at Manchester United, Solskjaer said (via FAFiltvedt on X):
"I don't like to talk about other managers' jobs, but yes. Of course, I would."
The Red Devils have had three managers since Solsjkaer's exit but none of them have been able to return the club to its glory days. Club legend Michael Carrick served briefly as a caretaker manager, and Ralf Ragnick also served as interim manager before the appointment of current manager Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch manager has managed to win two domestic titles for the club in the past two seasons. However, United's overall performance has been below par which leaves ten Hag's future at the club hanging in the balance.
Manchester United considering replacement options for Erik ten Hag after poor start to season
According to a report by TEAMTalk, the board at Old Trafford is currently considering other managers as possible replacements for Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager is under pressure following a poor start to the campaign by the Red Devils.
Manchester United has been struggling in the league, having only earned seven points from five games and are currently sitting in 14th position in the table. Additionally, they were recently held to a 1-1 draw by FC Twente in the Europa League opener.
According to the aforementioned report, the club is quietly considering other managers who could lead the club to success. Former England coach Gareth Southgate, Thomas Tuchel, Eddie Howe, and Simone Inzaghi are rumored to be under consideration by the club.
