"You just wish you were an ex-Man Utd star-turned-pundit" – Paul Scholes hits out at Alan Shearer after he aims dig at Manchester United legends

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed England great Alan Shearer after the latter recently aimed a dig at former Red Devils players following United's recent outing.

The Red Devils, who have won just three of their 11 total matches this season, are currently in 14th spot in the 2024-25 Premier League table. They were held to a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at Villa Park earlier this Sunday (October 9).

After the end of the Premier League contest, Shearer hit out at former Manchester United players and opined on the current Red Devils side. He said on The Rest Is Football podcast (h/t SPORTbible):

"They're just not good enough, though. We hear a lot from the ex-players from Manchester United. But United, [compared to] when they were playing, they're miles and miles away from that! They're not good enough in so many positions, particularly up front."

Scholes, who made 713 appearances for United as a player, subsequently offered his honest thoughts on Shearer's comments. He captioned a story on Instagram:

"Come on @alanshearer...you just wish you were an ex-Man Utd star-turned-pundit."

Shearer, who was allegedly linked with a move to United during his playing career, is considered to be one of the best strikers of his generation. He helped Blackburn Rovers win the Premier League title in 1995 and scored a record 260 goals in 441 Premier League games.

Paul Scholes critical of Manchester United pair following recent Premier League draw

After his former club's goalless draw at Villa Park, Paul Scholes hit out at Rasmus Hojlund and summer signing Joshua Zirkzee for failing to score on a regular basis. He told SuperSport (h/t SPORTbible):

"Look, Hojlund does alright but is he gonna score you 20 goals? I don't think so. Zirkzee... what is he? Is he a No.9 or a No.10? Is he going to get you 20 goals? I don't think so. I think they're relying more on hope than actual proven quality and they spent so much money as well. It's a ridiculous amount of money, and some of them can't get in the team!"

Hojlund, who left Atalanta in a potential £72 million move last summer, has bagged just one goal in five total games for his club this season.

Zirkzee, on the other hand, has scored once in 10 overall matches for Manchester United since arriving for around £36 million from Bologna.
