"Played as if his entire career depended on this game" - Fans hail Arsenal star for his showing in 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk

Arsenal fans were delighted with Gabriel Martinelli's performance in a 1-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League tonight (October 22). The Brazilian attacker was excellent throughout the clash at the Emirates as the Gunners bounced back from a shock 2-0 loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Martinelli deserved to get on the scoresheet, but the hosts' winner came through Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk's 29th-minute own goal. The 23-year-old winger did all the hard work, breaking forward and striking the post, and the ball deflected off the shot-stopper.

Arsenal eserved their second win of their Champions League campaign and made it seven points from three games. Martinelli was instrumental, making five key passes, successfully completing three dribbles and winning four of five ground and three in four aerial duels.

Leandro Trossard had the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 77th minute. The Belgian forward squandered the opportunity as Riznyk made a fine stop to deny him.

It was Martinelli who fans were thrilled with after watching Arteta's men return to winning ways. One fan wrote:

"Hats off Martinelli, the boy played as if his entire career depended on this game. Defended and attacked on equal measure more than any other player on the pitch."

More fans on X waxed lyrical about the Brazilian:

Arsenal turn their attention to league action on Sunday (October 27) when they host leaders Liverpool. The Gunners sit third, four points behind Arne Slot's Merseysiders after eight games.

Bukayo Saka missed the loss to Bournemouth and tonight's win against Shakhtar. It appears the English winger won't be available this weekend.

Arteta suggested Saka is unlikely to be fit when speaking after the game (via transfer expert Fabrizio Romano):

"Bukayo Saka vs Liverpool? Unlikely… he didn’t train yet since the injury happened."

Saka isn't the only injury concern, as Riccardo Calafiori was forced off against Shakhtar. Arteta said the situation was a bit of a worry and also ruled captain Martin Odegaard out of the clash with Liverpool.

Arsenal fans will be hoping Martinelli shines alongside Kai Havertz against Slot's Reds. The Brazilian has managed two goals and as many assists in 12 games across competitions.
