Premier League release statement to explain why Chelsea star Marc Cucurella received red card after full-time whistle in win against Brentford
The Premier League has released an official statement, explaining why Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella was sent off after full-time of their win over Brentford. The Blues sealed a hard-fought 2-1 league victory over the Bees at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (December 15).
Cucurella had a memorable performance against Brentford. The Spanish international performed his defensive duties adequately, recording two tackles, two clearances, and one interception. He also had a huge presence for his side up the pitch, completing five passes in the final third and scoring the opener in the 43rd minute off an assist from Noni Maduke.
Nicolas Jackson doubled Chelsea's lead in the 80th minute before Bryan Mbuemo halved the deficit (90') to set up a tense final minute at Stamford Bridge. Cucurella received a yellow card in the fifth minute of additional time for a foul. Referee Peter Bankes showed him a second yellow card after the final whistle was blown.
The Premier League has now confirmed that the referee dismissed the 26-year-old due to his aggressive attitude. A statement by the Premier League Match Centre on X reads (via football.london):
"The referee issued a second yellow card to Cucurella for adopting an aggressive attitude. [Kevin] Schade was also booked for the same offence."
Cucurella will miss Chelsea's next league game away against Everton on Sunday (December 22). He will not face further disciplinary action, but the red card can not be appealed as it was not a straight booking or called by VAR.
The Spanish defender has made 15 league appearances for the Blues this term, registering a goal and an assist.
Chelsea's Marc Cucurella reacts on social media after red card against Brentford
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella was hyped after scoring his first league goal for the club and helping the side to a 2-1 win over Brentford on Sunday. Despite his performance being marred by a red card after the final whistle, he took to Instagram to celebrate the Blues' victory.
Cucurella posted a picture on his official Instagram account of him celebrating his goal, with the caption:
"Good win at home to finish off the week! We go again."
Manager Enzo Maresca will have to deploy another left-back option in their next league game against Everton, as Cucurella will be unavailable due to his sending-off. The 26-year-old will likely return to action when Chelsea play Fulham in the Premier League on Boxing Day (December 26).
