“Proud to be part of a great team” - John Terry claims incredible Chelsea record will never be broken by another Premier League club
Legendary Chelsea defender John Terry is understandably proud to have represented the Blues in their record-breaking 2004-05 season. The Blues were unstoppable, winning their first-ever Premier League crown, while conceding just 15 goals in the league season, a record Terry thinks will never be broken.
Chelsea had been on the periphery for years but never managed to assert themselves as one of the protagonists of English football until Roman Abramovich came along in 2003. The Russian oligarch transformed the club's fortunes, spending heavily to get them to rub shoulders with the league's best sides.
The arrival of a young Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in 2004 marked the beginning of an era where John Terry played a key role. With the Englishman playing at the heart of their defense, Mourinho's side conceded just 15 goals across the 38-game Premier League season and won the league.
The former captain took to Instagram to remember the team's historic feat, declaring that the record will never be broken in the Premier League. He praised his former teammates with whom he achieved the record, as well.
"I recently got sent this list of the 15 goals we conceded in 2004/05, I can't help but be annoyed but also very proud to be part of a great team. Going over the games and goals in my head thinking this should be 10 or less. Records are there to be broken, but I'm not sure 15 goals conceded in the @premierleague will ever be beat," Terry wrote.
Here's the post:
Chelsea lost just once throughout the season, winning their first league title in 50 years. Goalkeeper Petr Cech also made history in his first season at the club as he kept 24 league clean sheets, a record that stands to this day.
Chelsea star emulates club legends as he picks up award
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has continued his meteoric rise in English football as he won the England Player of the Year award for 2024. The 22-year-old has emulated former Blues Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole in doing so.
England's players voted for the best among them in 2024, and Palmer was an unsurprising winner. The former Manchester City man led the 2023-24 Premier League in goal contributions with 22 goals and 11 assists in 33 games. He also scored in the final of Euro 2024, which England lost 2-1 to Spain.
Palmer became the third Chelsea man to receive the award. Lampard won it twice in 2004 and 2005, while Cole won in 2010 and was the last Blues player to win until Palmer.
