"Recently I thought about leaving it all" - Barcelona superstar claims he pondered early retirement due to 'personal and professional' problems
Barcelona winger Raphinha recently claimed that he contemplated quitting football and retiring to save his mental health.
The 27-year-old completed a reported €58 million transfer from Leeds United to Camp Nou in the summer of 2022 and hasn't particularly been brilliant since. He came under a fair share of criticism in his first season at Barca as he scored just seven goals and provided as many assists in 36 La Liga appearances.
A similar story continued with the Brazil international in the 2023-24 season as well as he netted just six times and provided nine assists in 28 La Liga matches.
Amid these circumstances, Raphinha revealed to MARCA (via Football Espana):
"Recently I thought about leaving it all due to personal and professional problems. I thought about giving up, leaving football, because I didn't need to go through some mental problems or difficulties and attacks by media or fans."
"Imagining that one day my son can see me as an inspiration in football, not being the best in the world, but as a reference, that is worth a lot," he added.
Raphinha has three years left on his deal with Barcelona and there has been speculation over the attacker's future. He is now away on international duty with Brazil, who will commence their Copa America 2024 campaign against Costa Rica on Monday, June 24.
To date, the former Leeds United man has made 23 appearances for his country, bagging six goals. He started Brazil's latest friendly on the right wing against the USA on June 12 (1-1).
Deco blocks Raphinha move from Barcelona as Saudi Pro League clubs show massive interest - Reports
Barcelona's sporting director Deco has reportedly blocked Raphinha's move away from Camp Nou, as Saudi Pro League clubs have shown a massive interest in the player.
According to SPORT, the Saudi Arabian clubs are willing to spend over €80 million to acquire the services of the Brazilian winger this summer (via The Hard Tackle).
This would seem like a favorable trade for the Blaugrana, who are facing financial troubles. However, it seems Raphinha could remain with the Catalan outfit and fight for a place on the flanks next season.
For now, youngster Lamine Yamal has seemingly locked down the spot on the right flank. The likes of Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres will provide Raphinha competition for minutes on the left-hand side.
