Reliable journalist provides Lionel Messi fitness update ahead of Argentina's 2024 Copa America clash against Peru

Argentina skipper Lionel Messi's condition will reportedly be 'studied' before their clash against Peru at 2024 Copa America on Saturday, June 29. The forward experienced discomfort in his groin/adductor area during their 1-0 win over Chile earlier this week.

TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul reported that Messi will 'do everything possible' to be available for the match at the Hard Rock Stadium. The 37-year-old missed Argentina's training session today (June 28), sparking injury concerns within his fanbase. It also raised uncertainty over his participation in the Peru game.

Lionel Messi was seen receiving treatment on his thigh during their Chile game, following which reports emerged that he could sit out of their clash on Friday. However, in a massive boost for his supporters, Edul has now revealed that the former Barcelona ace is pulling out all stops to feature against Los Incas.

Meanwhile, his entourage said he was better yesterday and they believe Messi will play in the quarter-finals. In two games so far, the Inter Miami forward has drawn a blank in front of goal. He did assist Lautaro Martinez for his 88th-minute goal against Canada on matchday one though.

In what's likely his last appearance in Copa America, the veteran will be aiming to bag a handful of goals. He will look to guide his side to a second straight title in the competition.

Argentina are unbeaten against Peru in 16 games

Lionel Messi or not, Argentina will have the psychological advantage against Peru. They haven't lost in the fixture over the last 27 years, a run stretching to 16 games right now.

Los Incas beat the Albiceleste 2-1 in the Copa America back in June 1997 but have since endured a dry spell against the South American giants. In fact, they've lost 12 times and avoided a defeat on four occasions.

In their most recent three fixtures, all coming in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Argentina won by an aggregate of 5-0. Moreover, in their last Copa America meeting, coming in 2007, the two-time world champions won 4-0, with Lionel Messi scoring once.
