Robert Lewandowski joins an elite list headlined by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after his brace in Barcelona's win over Sevilla
Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has joined the duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the third-highest scorer in Europe's top-five league history. The Polish striker scored a brace for La Blaugrana as they continued their rich vein of form with a 5-1 rout of Sevilla in LaLiga on Sunday, October 20.
Lewandowski began his career in his native Poland before moving to Borussia Dortmund, his first club in Europe's top-five leagues, in 2010. He spent four seasons at the Signal Iduna Park before jumping ship to join Bayern Munich as a free agent in 2014. Now 36, the Polish striker has been at Camp Nou since 2022 and has continued to show his quality in Spain.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring against Sevilla in the 24th minute via a penalty before doubling his tally in the 39th minute. Pedri (28') and Pablo Toree (82' and 88') were the other goalscorers for Barca.
Lewandowski's brace took him to 366 league goals, making him a clear third in the list of highest scorers in Europe's top-five leagues. His goals came in just 463 league appearances - 312 in 384 games in Germany and 54 in 76 in Spain.
Lionel Messi leads the list with 496 goals, one more than his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi scored 474 times in 520 LaLiga appearances for Barcelona before netting 22 times in 58 Ligue 1 games for Paris Saint-Germain.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, played in three of the big leagues, scoring 311 times in 292 LaLiga appearances for Real Madrid and 81 times in 98 Serie A games for Juventus. He also scored 103 times in 236 appearances in the Premier League with Manchester United across two stints.
Lewandowski emulates Messi in Barcelona's win over Sevilla
Robert Lewandowski emulated Barcelona icon Lionel Messi in his side's 5-1 thrashing of Sevilla on Sunday. The Polish striker netted a brace for La Blaugrana as they remained atop the LaLiga table with 29 points from 10 games.
Lewandowski took his league tally for the season to 12 goals in 10 games, becoming the first player since Messi to do so. The Argentine forward scored the same number of goals in the opening 10 games of the 2019-20 season, his penultimate season in Spain.
Barcelona, who will next face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 23, are three points clear of second-placed Real Madrid in LaLiga.
