Rodri and Alvaro Morata have been charged by UEFA for their chants in Spain's Euro 2024 victory celebrations
Spain stars Rodri and Alvaro Morata have been charged by UEFA for their chants during the Euro 2024 victory celebrations. La Roja were crowned champions of Europe after they beat England 2-1 in this year's final.
However, during the celebrations, the pair were seen chanting 'Gibraltar is Spanish', which has put them in hot water. Gibraltar, a former Spanish territory located on the Southern tip of Spain, has been under British rule since the 18th century.
Since then, the Spanish have been demanding its return and in furtherance of the same, Morata urged the crowd to join in on the chant. Following these actions, the Gibraltar FA lodged a complaint with UEFA and said (via BBC Sport):
"Noted the extremely provocative and insinuating nature of the celebrations around the Spanish Men's national team winning Euro 2024. Football has no place for behaviour of such nature."
It seems like the chants violated UEFA's rule against using sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature. Now, the governing organization's control, ethics and disciplinary body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course.
Rodri and Morata both enjoyed successful European Championship campaigns, with the latter serving as captain and contributing with a goal and an assist each. Meanwhile, the Manchester City midfielder was awarded the Player of the Tournament after bagging a goal in six appearances in the competition.
Rordi is also considered widely to be in contention for this year's Ballon d'Or award.

Following Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, Alvaro Morata has completed a move from Atletico Madrid to AC Milan. According to reports, the striker's £11 million release clause was triggered in order to get the deal completed.
Morata has signed a four-year contract with the Rossoneri that can be extended by a further 12 months. The 31-year-old's most notable spell in his career so far has come with Juventus, where he made 185 appearances, bagging 59 goals and 39 assists.
Meanwhile, Rodri is looking ahead to the Premier League season with Manchester City after winning the title last year. The Cityzens get their league season underway with a match at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on August 18.
