“Ronaldo has been very poor!” - Scotland star’s now-deleted old tweet resurfaces after Cristiano Ronaldo bags winner in Nations League clash

Cristiano Ronaldo has consistently silenced his critics and did so again after scoring a late winner for Portugal against Scotland in their Nations League clash. This time, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn was on the receiving end as an old tweet of his resurfaced after Ronaldo’s decisive goal in the 2-1 win.

Since the disappointing Euros campaign, Ronaldo looks recharged, starting the season in excellent form. After netting four goals in as many games for Al-Nassr, the 39-year-old carried his momentum into international duty. He scored two winning goals - first against Croatia, then against Scotland - both 2-1 wins.

Although Portugal boss Roberto Martinez initially opted to start the Real Madrid legend on the bench, Ronaldo made a significant impact as a second-half substitute against Scotland. With the match seemingly headed for a 1-1 draw, he once again delivered in the 88th minute, positioning himself perfectly to convert Nuno Mendes’ cross.

Interestingly, the goalkeeper he scored against, Angus Gunn, tweeted about Ronaldo’s form in 2011. The custodian was just 15 then, playing for Manchester City’s youth team. Football fans quickly pointed out the irony, given that Ronaldo later scored against him.

The tweet read:

"Ronaldo has been very poor #notwhathewas"

The tweet has now been deleted after receiving an overwhelming response in the comments from football fans and supporters. It was originally posted when Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in El Clasico.

It’s safe to say that the former Manchester United star has certainly proven Gunn wrong, particularly given his incredible goalscoring form since 2011. The goal against Scotland marked the 901st of his career.
