Roy Keane calls out Manchester United players for their role in Erik ten Hag's sacking
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has slammed Red Devils stars for playing a part in former club manager Erik ten Hag's recent dismissal.
Earlier on Monday (October 28), Manchester United decided to fire Ten Hag after a 2-1 Premier League loss against West Ham United. They announced that Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim will become their new full-time head coach later in November earlier this Friday.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Keane asserted that he was disheartened to see Ten Hag get fired and opined on Amorim's arrival. He said (h/t Manchester Evening News):
"Disappointed, you always are [after a manager's sacked]. It's a new start, new manager coming in in a couple of weeks. You always wish him well. It's a big challenge for him trying to get United back competing at the top of the table. It's a big ask, you wish him well."
Lambasting the players' poor performances under Ten Hag, he added:
"But you always have sympathy for a manager losing his job and ultimately I think, whatever [you think] about the board, the players let him down by their efforts and not being good enough."
Keane, who represented Manchester United 475 times as a player, said:
"The challenge will be, of course, getting players in. We make the point about there's a few players in the United team in big positions who can't run, right, which is a big problem. But they also have players who don't want to run, or when they do run, they don't run hard enough, or run fast enough or long enough."
Manchester United, who splashed close to £180 million on new players earlier this summer, will next be in action on Sunday. They will host Chelsea in a league clash at Old Trafford.
Manchester United aiming to sign 20-year-old
According to The Sun, incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is hoping to reunite with Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande. But, he will have to convince the Red Devils' board to break the bank with the Ivorian boasting a release clause of around £70 million.
Diomande, who joined Sporting from Danish team Midtjylland for over £6 million in January 2023, has been in great form since the start of the season. He has helped his team register seven clean sheets in 12 appearances across all competitions so far this campaign.
Meanwhile, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner has reportedly attracted interest from Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea of late.
