Ruud van Nistelrooy applies for vacant managerial role in England just days after being let go by Manchester United: Reports

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has reportedly applied to be the next manager of Coventry City after he was relieved of his duties by the Premier League side. The Dutchman was appointed interim manager of the Red Devils following the sacking of Erik ten Hag in October, having been assistant to the former Ajax manager.

Van Nistelrooy arrived at Old Trafford in the summer after a spell in charge of Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven. He was appointed alongside Rene Hake to assist ten Hag. Their tenure was short-lived as Ten Hag was dismissed on October 28 following a poor run of results, and van Nistelrooy was named as the interim boss. The arrival of Ruben Amorim in a substantive capacity meant that the club legend had to leave the club, as the Portuguese came with his own team.

A report from talkSPORT has revealed that Ruud van Nistelrooy has now put himself forward as a candidate to manage Championship side Coventry City next. The Sky Blues parted ways with another former Manchester United striker, Mark Robins, earlier this season after he left them in 17th place in the second tier.

Van Nistelrooy becomes the second high-profile name linked with the job after former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard. The Dutchman appears keen on a career in England. He enjoyed a successful spell as interim manager of the Red Devils, winning three and drawing one of four games to steady the ship ahead of Amorim's arrival.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was reportedly keen on remaining at Old Trafford, but the new Head Coach of the club decided against keeping him at the club. He will be hopeful of landing the Coventry City job, with the side having reached the playoff finals in 2023 and FA Cup semi-finals in 2024.

Manchester United star returns early from international duty

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been excused from the Portugal camp after helping his side book qualification from their UEFA Nations League group. The Selecao claimed a 5-1 win over Poland on Friday (November 15) in Porto to reach the quarterfinals of this year's Nations League.

Bruno Fernandes was on the scoresheet for his country, scoring alongside Cristiano Ronaldo (two), Rafael Leao, and Pedro Neto. The midfielder will now return to his club alongside Neto, Ronaldo, and Bernardo Silva, and will not feature against Croatia.

Fernandes will be eager to get down to work under Ruben Amorim, who was in charge of his former club Sporting CP, this season. The midfielder will have a major role to play in helping Manchester United recover from a collectively poor start to the 2024-25 season.
