Shakira set to earn staggering amount for 5-minute performance at Copa America final as CONMEBOL’s offer comes to light: Reports
Colombian superstar Shakira will be the main attraction in the halftime interval of the Copa America 2024 final on Sunday, July 14. Lionel Messi's Argentina will take on James Rodriguez's Colombia in a clash at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and Shakira will be there to light up the stage when the players take a hiatus after the first 45 minutes.
According to Argentine journalist Juan Etchegoyen, Shakira will pocket a 'bestial' fee for her performance. The Colombian singer will reportedly be paid $2 million for a performance spanning just five minutes where she will sing her hit musical numbers over the years.
In an interview with Mitre Live, Etchegoyen commented:
"The money that CONMEBOL will invest in the final is bestial. We know that soccer generates that kind of money and it will end up coming back to you with what they will invoice, but it never ceases to surprise me."
Copa America hasn't had a performance lined up during halftime before, so this will be a first of its kind. On the contrary, the United States' Super Bowl is known for its iconic performances during the halftime show. Juggernauts from the industry like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and many others have set the stage alight during the Super Bowl halftime show in the past.
Alejandro Dominguez, the President of CONMEBOL, also commented on Shakira's historic performance scheduled to take place on Sunday.
"Shakira is an extraordinary South American star who has dazzled the entire world. Her songs are sung and danced to in every corner of the planet, turning her art into a global phenomenon that crosses borders and is enjoyed by millions of people," Dominguez said (via copaamerica.com).
He continued:
"We are sure that her performance at the CONMEBOL Copa America USA 2024™ will enhance the message of healthy passion and unity through sport."
Shakira could be headlining the halftime show of Lionel Messi's last Copa America appearance
Lionel Messi is a veteran of Copa America having participated in a whopping seven iterations of the tournament so far. The Argentine World Cup winner will take on an inspired Colombia side in what will likely be his final ninety minutes in the continental competition.
In 38 appearances for Argentina in Copa America, Messi has scored 14 goals and has assisted 18 times, making it a whopping 0.84 goal contributions per game. His goal-creating skills seem to get heightened in do-or-die matches as 12 of those 18 assists have come in knockout clashes.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner finally won the Copa America in 2021 after being on the losing side in three finals. La Albiceleste defeated Neymar's Brazil by a scoreline of 1-0 courtesy of a chipped goal by Angel Di Maria over goalkeeper Ederson in the 22nd minute.
