Sporting CP star breaks silence amid reports of following Ruben Amorim to Manchester United
Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has shared his thoughts on a potential move to Manchester United to follow his manager Ruben Amorim. He asserted that he is focused on the Portuguese side for now and expressed his sadness at the manager's impending departure.
The Red Devils announced on Friday (November 1) that they have agreed on a deal with Sporting CP to sign Ruben Amorim as their new manager. He will start at the club on November 11. Amidst his impending move, some of his players have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Gyokeres.
The Swedish striker has now shared his thoughts on the claims and said on Friday (via Metro):
"Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know. I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best."
Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific strikers in world football since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City in the summer of 2023. He has scored 59 goals and provided 19 assists in 65 games for the club.
This season, he's racked up 20 goals and four assists in 16 games across competitions. He scored four goals against Amateur Star in a 5-1 win for Sporting at home on Friday.
Manchester United legend reckons Ruben Amorim will bring Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford
The Red Devils have struggled to score this season. They have scored just eight goals in nine Premier League games, with only Crystal Palace and Southampton below them in the goalscoring chart. Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored just one goal each in the league this season.
Amidst such struggles, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Ruben Amorim will look to sign Viktor Gyokeres. He said (via Metro):
"Gyokeres has scored a hat load of goals and Amorim has made a player out of him,’ Ferdinand told Rio Reacts. ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if he says "there is one player I need to get out of there [Sporting] and it’s going to be him”.
"He’s is integral for him. What happens to Rasmus Hojlund if they break the bank for someone like him? 64 appearances, 53 goals, played in England before albeit in the Championship. Would they break the bank for him and what would that mean for Hojlund? It’s a big decision to make."
Apart from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with Gyokeres, who could cost around £60 million.
