"Teams flock to players like that" - Sergio Aguero names player he expects Ruben Amorim to sign for Manchester United
Sergio Aguero has tipped Viktor Gyokeres to join his former manager, Ruben Amorim, at Manchester United. The Swedish striker was a revelation under the Portuguese tactician at Sporting CP, rivalling Erling Haaland as Europe's goalscoring machine.
Gyokeres, 26, has struck 23 goals and four assists in 18 games across competitions this season. Amorim signed him from Coventry City in July 2023, and many think he'll follow him to Old Trafford.
Aguero spoke about the possibility of the pair reuniting at Manchester United. The Manchester City legend told Stake (via Manchester Evening News):
"I haven't seen too much of Viktor Gyokeres, but I know he's a striker with a great record."
Aguero added:
"Teams flock to players like that when that's what they're missing. If he has a good rapport with Ruben Amorim, I think that makes a move to Manchester United even more probable. We'll see."
Amorim ruled out targeting Gyokeres in the January transfer window but didn't dismiss a move for any Sporting player beyond that period. His former frontman has just over three years left on his contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
BBC Sport reports that the Liga Portugal giants are open to selling Gyokeres for less than his £83 million release clause. A fee of £70 million might be enough to bring the 26-cap Sweden international to Old Trafford.
Wes Brown urged Manchester United and Amorim to keep faith in Rasmus Hojlund amid Viktor Gyokeres links
If Manchester United were to swoop for Gyokeres it could spell trouble for Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane has been the club's starting striker since arriving from Atalanta in August 2023 for £72 million.
Hojlund, 21, has had a topsy-turvy spell, scoring 18 goals and two assists in 55 games across competitions. He could be at risk of losing his place in the starting XI if Gyokeres were to arrive.
Wes Brown thinks United should have patience with Hojlund because he might flourish in a new system. The club's former right-back said (via Express Sport):
"I do feel once Hojlund starts and gets up and running and the new style. I feel there will be more opportunities for him."
Hojlund possesses similar playing characteristics to Gyokeres with his physicality and runs into the box. He spearheads a three-man attack but has been unable to link up well with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.
