"That’s not too hard for Amorim to get" - Jaime Carragher highlights 'quick fix' he expects from newly appointed Ruben Amorim at Manchester United
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed confidence that Ruben Amorim is capable of quickly addressing a critical issue at Manchester United. Just days after Erik ten Hag’s departure, the Red Devils have moved swiftly to appoint Amorim as his successor.
Amorim, who earned 14 caps for Portugal, became Sporting CP’s head coach in 2020. He clinched the Primeira Liga title in his first full season and has since turned Sporting into a consistent title contender.
However, he arrives at United with several challenges to tackle following their poor start under Ten Hag. The Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League, with just three wins from nine matches. They have also drawn all three of their opening Europa League games, leaving them in a disappointing 21st position in the standings.
Carragher believes that Amorim will need time to establish his style. However, he added that the Portuguese is capable of immediately guiding United back into the top four, given the squad’s strength.
"It’s a big job for Ruben Amorim. Manchester United are 14th but that’s a quick fix because Manchester United shouldn’t be 14th. They’ve got a squad that’s just outside the Champions League places, competing with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Chelsea. They’re not too far away," Carragher told Sky Sports.
However, Carragher believes that consistently challenging for Premier League titles and contending with the top teams will be a difficult task for United’s new head coach.
“Making that step is difficult. In terms of getting over the line, that’s the toughest. [Ole] Solskjaer finished second, [Jose] Mourinho finished second, [Erik] Ten Hag finished third – that’s not too hard for Amorim to get to, it is the next step after that," he added (via Football365.com) .
Amorim will remain in charge of Sporting CP for the next week and is set to join United only on November 11. He has signed a contract with the club that extends until at least the end of the 2026-27 season.
Rio Ferdinand reveals what Nani shared with him about new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim played alongside former Manchester United star Nani during their time with the Portugal national team. Rio Ferdinand mentioned that he spoke to Nani, who described Amorim as a very direct person with his players.
Ferdinand consequently believes that Amorim’s personality will differ from that of Erik ten Hag.
“I spoke to Nani a few days ago and he said to me: ‘Rio, the players play for him, they love him and respect him. He said that Ruben Amorim is a very direct person. What I have heard from people who have played with him and who are around him is that, as a human being, Amorim’s character and charisma will be the big difference to Ten Hag," he said (via United in Focus).
Amorim will face Nani on Friday, November 1, when Sporting takes on Estrela Amadora, where the latter currently plays. He will then go up against Manchester United’s fierce rivals, Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on November 5. He will then bid his farewell to Sporting on November 10 in a clash against Braga.
