"That's their main strength" – Antony Gordon explains what Newcastle United must do to put Liverpool under pressure at St James' Park
Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has opened up on what his should must do to hinder Liverpool in their Premier League encounter at St. James' Park on Wednesday (December 4).
The Magpies, who finished seventh last term, are in 11th place in the 2024-25 Premier League table with 19 points from 13 games. They have scored a mere 14 goals and shipped the same amount of goals in the league so far this season.
The Merseyside outfit, on the other hand, are one of the most in-form sides in the world. They are on a 16-game unbeaten run across competitions and are atop the league table with 34 points from 13 matches with a +18 goal difference.
Ahead of Newcastle's upcoming league game, Gordon claimed that the Magpies should put the Reds under pressure from the first whistle. He told NUTV (h/t Liverpool Echo):
"We need to start like we always do at St James'. Put them under pressure, really go for them and maintain the performance. The thing is with teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, and [Manchester] City is if we do score, if we do go behind, we have got to understand that the game is not over. You just have to keep going right until the very end because those teams come and come again."
Gordon, who was reportedly a Reds target earlier this summer, added:
"That's their main strength. They create so many chances but to be fair against Arsenal and City, we did that very well. We conceded early against City and kept going until the end. We scored early against Arsenal and kept going until the end and got two great results so, hopefully, it will be more of the same against Liverpool."
So far this season, Gordon has found the back of the net two times and provided an assist in 12 league games for the Eddie Howe-coached outfit.
What will be Liverpool's lineup in next match?
Liverpool, who defeated Manchester City 2-0 in their previous league game, could be without a number of players in their clash against Newcastle United.
Ibrahima Konate, Konstantinos Tsimikas, and Conor Bradley will miss the Reds' next clash due to their respective injuries. Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa are also regarded as injury doubts for the upcoming league encounter.
The Magpies, on the other hand, are likely to be without Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth due to the quartet's respective injuries.
