"That's why Rodri has won the Ballon d'Or", "Beginning of the end " - X reacts as Bournemouth defeat Manchester City 2-1 in PL clash
Fans on X reacted with surprise to Premier League champions Manchester City succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth on Saturday, November 2. The champions lost for the first time in the league this year as they also lost their place at the summit of the standings in the division.
Buoyed by a win against Arsenal in their last home game, Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth were full of belief as they locked horns with Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium. City manager Pep Guardiola spoke earlier in the week about his side having just 13 outfield players available amid a spate of injuries. However, he had a near-full-strength squad for the game.
Manchester City conceded once in each half before scoring a late consolation which led to a nervy finale at the home of the Cherries. The home side held on to inflict the first defeat of the season on Guardiola's side, sparking reactions from fans on X.
One fan wrote:
"And that's why Rodri has won the Ballon d'Or."
Another tweeted:
"The beginning of the end surely!"
A fan had a theory that the Cityzens lose games like these to make the title race more competitive.
"City always does this to make it seem competitive at the end", they wrote.
Another fan took the opportunity to poke fun at the champions.
"Letβs all laugh at city ππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ", they posted.
A fan referenced Rodri's Ballon d'Or win, citing it as the reason for his side's failure to win.
"Man City spent all their money buying the Ballon d'Or for Rodri. They had no cash left to buy referees against Bournemouth today", they wrote.
Another predicted that Liverpool will end the season as league champions.
"Liverpool will win the league this year", they posted.
The defeat to Bournemouth leaves Pep Guardiola's side two points adrift of leaders Liverpool after the Reds claimed a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Chasing a fifth consecutive league title, they find themselves among the chasing pack after 10 matches.
Bournemouth stun Manchester City in Premier League clash
Bournemouth picked up a shock 2-1 win over champions Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium home to hand them a first league defeat of 2024. The Cherries, who were responsible for Arsenal's first away defeat of 2024, were at it again as they claimed another huge scalp.
Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring for Andoni Iraola's side after just nine minutes. He collected a low cross from Milos Kerkez before swiveling sharply and finishing into the bottom corner. The Cherries found a second in the 64th minute through Brazilian striker Evanilson, who poked home another low cross from Kerkez.
Manchester City pulled one back in the 82nd minute as Josko Gvardiol headed home following a cross from Ilkay Gundogan. The champions tried but failed to find a leveler, with Bournemouth holding on to end their 32-game unbeaten run with their first-ever win over City.
