"That's the type of player Liverpool should be interested in" - Michael Owen urges Reds to pursue deal for PL star if possible
Michael Owen has urged Liverpool to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United if possible. He claims that Magpies boss Eddie Howe will do everything to keep the winger as he is one of the most exciting youngsters in the league.
Speaking to Casino Hawks, Owen claimed that Gordon is the type of player Liverpool should target.
"There's no doubt Anthony Gordon is a talented boy. Obviously there's a little bit of history there, being an Everton player and now being up in Newcastle. I can't imagine, unless Newcastle are suffering with the money side of things, then I can't imagine they'll want to get rid of one of their most exciting young players," he said.
"He's done really well at Newcastle since he's been there, so I'm sure Eddie Howe is desperate to keep him. I'm not sure how credible that story can be, but that is the type of player, if somebody like that came available, then of course that's the type of player L'pool should be interested in," Owen added.
Liverpool tried to sign Anthony Gordon this summer, reports Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool tried to sign Anthony Gordon this summer but could not agree a deal with Newcastle United. The Reds are still interested in the winger but consider him too expensive.
Romano said in his Daily Briefings:
"L'pool tried to explore the Anthony Gordon deal in June as an opportunity but Newcastle didn't open the door. Despite fresh speculation, I'm not aware of anything new going on – it's still the same situation. Appreciation remains but no direct negotiations yet, and also at the current conditions L'pool consider that too expensive. It's quiet now, but we will see later in the window."
Anthony Gordon played for Everton before moving to Newcastle United. However, he was always a Liverpool fan and is open to joining the Anfield side.
Reports suggest Newcastle United want over £75 million to sell Gordon this summer. They are not interested in negotiating a fee lower than the asking price as they know the Reds see him as the ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah.
