“The Ballon d'Or is different” - Ex-Manchester United star delivers verdict on Manchester City midfielder Rodri winning award

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes that Manchester City defensive midfielder, Rodri's position could be a problem in him winning the Ballon d'Or. The Spain international's name is being thrown around on social media as a contender for the honor after he helped his nation win Euro 2024.

He made six appearances, bagging a goal and was also awarded the Player of the Tournament. The 28-year-old enjoyed another good season with Manchester City as well, winning the Premier League on the last day of the campaign.

However, Brown is unsure whether the Spaniard will win the prize, given he isn't a flair player. Speaking on Reach's Euro Thrash podcast, he said (via Mirror):

"Even when he came to City, he didn't get recognized straight away. It takes a while for people to go 'oh my god, he's not lost'. It is his position, his timing, his leadership behind the scenes, there are not many you can say have been better at what he does."
"The Ballon d'Or is different, though. It is a bit more for flair players, goalscorers. But he should be up there to be nominated."

Rodri will be expecting to face competition from Real Madrid stars Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, who enjoyed wonderful club seasons. Many have even named the midfielder's Spain teammate Dani Carvajal as a potential candidate.

The Los Blancos right-back won Euro 2024, the UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles in the 2023/24 season.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has urged the Ballon d'Or 2024 award to go to his defensive midfielder Rodri. From a deep-lying midfield role, the Manchester City star played a key part in keeping the ball moving at the back, with La Roja dominating possession at Euro 2024.

However, he could not complete the final due to injury, as Spain beat England 2-1 to claim their fourth European Championships. Nodding to the midfielder's contributions throughout the competition, De la Fuente said (via Football Espana):

"Rodri, Ballon d'Or now, please, he's the best in the world."

During his club season with Manchester City last year, he made 50 appearances across competitions, bagging nine goals and 14 assists from a defensive midfield role.
