"The football was not worth watching " - Aad de Mos explains the 'wrong choices' Erik ten Hag made at Manchester United amid national team links

Dutch coach Aad de Mos believes former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag made a lot of wrong choices during his time at Old Trafford. Ten Hag was removed from the hot seat at the club at the end of October following a poor run of results.

The former Ajax manager won the EFL Cup and the FA Cup with the Red Devils during his two-and-a-half seasons in charge. He could be a candidate for the Dutch managerial job should current manager Ronald Koeman leave.

However, De Mos insisted on the Soccer News Stalen Snor podcast that Liverpool manager Arne Slot would be a better fit than Ten Hag for the national team.

“I think that in Koeman we have a coach who is doing reasonably well. Ten Hag has not built up so much credit that he should now be considered for the national coachship. He has shown almost nothing at Manchester United. Ten Hag was able to buy players for €600m. He has made many wrong choices," said De Mos.

He continued:

“You should never bring so many Dutch players and players from your old employer to your club. The Eredivisie is of course a different level than the Premier League. He has made himself vulnerable by only using this old network."

He concluded:

“The football was not worth watching. He was fourteenth in the league and could not win against FC Twente in Europe. I think that in terms of national coachship, you should rather end up with Arne Slot. Slot does not even have to be fired for that, but as a possible double function.”

Manchester United have already appointed former Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as Ten Hag's replacement.

When is Ruben Amorim's first game in charge of Manchester United?

Ruben Amorim took charge as Manchester United's new head coach on November 11. The Portuguese arrives from Sporting with an enviable record, having won the league title twice in his four seasons in charge.

Amorim, however, will need time to assert his influence in a team that has struggled to impress on the pitch of late. The Red Devils have scored just 12 goals from 11 games in the Premier League this season and are already 13 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Amorim is now preparing for his first game in charge of Manchester United, which will be at Portman Road on Sunday, November 24, against Ipswich Town in the league. It will be followed by a home clash against Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League on November 28. The Red Devils are 15th in the UEL table.
