"The journey continues" - Brazilian legend sends emotional message to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr after missing out 2024 Ballon d'Or
Brazil legend Romario has lent his support to Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr after the latter missed out on the Ballon d'Or trophy. The 24-year-old was outstanding for Los Blancos last season, registering 24 goals and 11 assists from 39 games.
The Brazilian's efforts helped the Spanish giants secure a league and Champions League double while they also won the Spanish Supercup. However, it wasn't enough for Vinicius to win the Ballon d'Or, with Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri winning it on Monday, October 28.
Sharing a message on Instagram, Romario urged his countryman to keep going.
“Viní Jr, life, like football, is like that: sometimes victory doesn’t come straight away. I was rooting too hard for you to be chosen, but I know it’s part of the game and of those who strive to be the best," wrote Romario via Madrid Xtra.
"You have shown grit, resilience, and courage, not just on the pitch, but in your fight against racism, facing challenges like a true giant. The journey continues, and you still have a long way to go, many trophies to lift. We’re with you every game, every battle because your fight is ours too. Keep going, keep your head up, and keep moving forward,” he added.
Real Madrid were absent from Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony as a protest.
How has Vinicius Jr performed for Real Madrid this season?
Vinicius Jr was heavily linked with a move away from Real Madrid over the summer. There was tremendous interest in his services from the Middle East, with Los Blancos reportedly turning down a colossal offer for the Brazilian.
The player faced a challenge at the Santiago Bernabeu following Kylian Mbappe's arrival as a free agent over the summer. The French superstar prefers to operate in the left-forward role, which added to speculation regarding Vinicius' future.
However, Mbappe was forced to adjust, with Carlo Ancelotti using him in the No. 9 role. Vinicius, meanwhile, has continued his stellar form for Real Madrid this season.
The Brazilian has registered eight goals and seven assists from 15 games across competitions. He scored a hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week, helping Los Blancos secure a 5-2 comeback win.
While the Brazil international failed to make a mark in the 4-0 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico, he remains a key figure for Real Madrid. If he manages to hold on to his performance levels, Vinicius is likely to get his hands on the Ballon d'Or in due time.
