"The lad had it at his feet" - Paul Merson says Manchester United attacker has only himself to blame for his failings

Paul Merson has claimed that Jadon Sancho can only blame himself for his failure at Manchester United. The England international completely went out of favor at Old Trafford following a fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag in September.

Sancho was left out of Manchester United's squad for the 3-1 loss at Arsenal due to training-related concerns, as stated by Ten Hag. The forward then made a controversial post on his X account, where he claimed he was being made a scapegoat, which he later deleted. He has since not featured for the Red Devils and has joined his former club Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Paul Merson has claimed that Sancho can only blame himself for his failed stint at Manchester United. The pundit has claimed that all the attacker needed to do was to apologize to the manager and that he chose not to. He has insisted that one day, the Englishman will regret that he threw his Manchester United career away.

When asked who to blame for Sancho's failed stint at Old Trafford, Merson told Sky Sports, as quoted by HITC Sport:

“The lad.”

Merson added:

“Of course, it is (solely on his door). He could have gone to the manager and said ‘I am sorry. What I said was a bit harsh’. Even if he didn’t mean it, just go in and say it. He will look back on this when his career is finished at 32, whatever age he is, and think I just signed for the biggest club in the world and I threw it all away."

The Sky Sports pundit concluded:

“That’s the problem with football sometimes now. They get the money so quickly that it doesn’t really matter. The lad had it at his feet – he will look back on his career and think ‘what have I done?’ And he is to blame. He is to blame.”

Sancho made an immediate impact following his return to Borussia Dortmund on loan, assisting Marco Reus after coming off the bench against Darmstadt. The £73 million signing at Manchester United scored just 12 goals and provided six assists in 82 games for the Red Devils.

Fans convinced Gary Neville aimed a dig at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag when he reacted to Jadon Sancho's assist for Borussia Dortmund

Twitter hilariously reacted as Manchester United legend Gary Neville had his say on Jadon Sancho's assist on his second Borussia Dortmund debut. The England international made an immediate impact upon his return to Signal Iduna Park by teeing Marco Reus up against Darmstadt.

As mentioned earlier, Sancho and Ten Hag had a public fall-out, which resulted in the winger being frozen out of the squad. The Red Devils boss publicly criticized Sancho for his lack of intensity in training, and the player hit back at Ten Hag on X but later deleted his post.

The 23-year-old never apologized for his actions and has reminded the world of his undisputed talent upon his return to first-team football with Borussia Dortmund.

Interestingly, Sancho's loan deal with Borussia Dortmund doesn't include an option for the Bundesliga side to sign him permanently. So the winger will be back at Old Trafford in the summer.
