"The number one centre-half in the country" - Former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino makes bold claim about Arsenal defender

Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino was full of praise for Arsenal centre-back William Saliba. The ex-Chelsea man claimed that the Frenchman was the best central defender in the Premier League, highlighting his all-round qualities.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cascarino said:

“My first one is Saliba, who I have to say has now become the number one centre-half in the country,” the 61-year-old said.
“I think the composure plus the athleticism, and his ability of stopping and denying. He has made some great last-ditch challenges. You know, when you think people are in and suddenly he comes in with a big tackle,” he added.

Saliba has formed a strong partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of Arsenal's defense. The pair have helped the Gunners lead the Premier League in the number of clean sheets this season (18), proving to be a solid presence at the back.

Their performances have once again lifted Mikel Arteta's side to a title race. They need a win against Everton and hope for Manchester City to drop points against West Ham United to win their first league title since 2003-04.

The 23-year-old was signed by Arsenal in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £27 million. He went on to spend a couple more seasons on loan with Ligue 1 sides Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille before becoming a full-fledged starter for the Gunners last season. He has played in every minute of the season for Arteta's side, bagging two goals and an assist.

Brazilian legend urges Arsenal star to leave the club

Brazil icon Rivaldo has suggested that Arsenal attacker Gabriel Jesus should leave the club. The former Barcelona man claimed that the 27-year-old should seek more playing minutes to guarantee his selection for the 2026 World Cup squad.

Rivaldo said (via Football365):

“The same goes for Gabriel Jesus. He has lost his place in the Arsenal starting line-up and spends too much time on the bench.
“He has already been to the World Cup, but there are other players in the same position standing out, scoring goals, and Jesus needs more minutes.
“Without much opportunity to play, it is time for him to think about leaving the club to be able to return to the Brazilian national team.
“Jesus needs to be ready for the 2026 World Cup and he will not get there because of what he did in the past. Football is about what a player is currently showing, so he needs to be a starter.”

It has been a difficult season in front of goal for the 27-year-old. Struggling with injuries and unable to receive proper game time, he has bagged just four goals in the Premier League in 26 games this season.

Jesus has already missed out on the Selecao's squad for the upcoming Copa America. Should he want to return to the team for the 2026 World Cup, a move away from the Emirates could be useful.
