"The past 18 months, he's just been nowhere near" - Paul Scholes backs 27-year-old star to leave Manchester United next summer
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Marcus Rashford's time at Old Trafford could be coming to an end. The English forward was left out of the Red Devils' squad for the Manchester Derby at the weekend, which Ruben Amorim's team won 2-1.
Rashford hasn't been in his element of late and has received continued criticism for his poor form. He has registered just seven goals and three assists from 24 games across competitions this season.
On The Overlap Fan Debate this week, Scholes insisted that Rashford doesn't look happy at Manchester United (via Daily Mail).
"It feels like the end for him. He doesn't look happy, the lad. Even if he's scoring a goal. You think, what's wrong with him? Is he getting the right support behind the scenes?" said Scholes.
He continued:
"You don't know what's happening. But it did happen with (Erik) ten Hag, I think he was late for a meeting before the Wolves game, and again, he's been left out of this squad. I think his on and off-the-field choices aren't quite right."
Scholes added that Marcus Rashford has received criticism because he has failed to live up to the standards that he set for himself.
"I hate seeing local lads leave, especially when they're so talented. But I think the thing with Marcus is, he was that good two years ago, when he had that season when he scored 30 goals - he's just never managed to get to that level again and that's why he gets the stick. He produced the standard, and then for the past 18 months, two years, he's just been nowhere near," said Scholes.
He concluded:
"There's every chance that could happen (Rashford going to another club and succeeding). But he's not doing that for us."
The 27-year-old has since admitted in an interview with journalist Henry Winter that he is open to an exit from Manchester United. It has previously been suggested that the Red Devils are willing to let him go for £40 million in 2025, amid interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
How many goals has Marcus Rashford scored for Manchester United?
Marcus Rashford rose through the ranks at Manchester United and has since registered 138 goals from 426 games for the club to date. The Englishman has appeared in six of the seven games since the arrival of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, three of which have been starts.
The forward has registered three goals for the Red Devils during that period, with only Rasmus Hojlund scoring more for the team under the Portuguese manager.
Manchester United return to action against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, December 19 in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. Rashford was reportedly sent away from training due to a high temperature and his participation in the game now remains in doubt.
