"There's other managers who complicate it" - Manchester City star Phil Foden opens up on advice from Guardiola
Manchester City superstar Phil Foden has opened up on the advice he got from his manager Pep Guardiola. The attacker stated that the City boss implored him to keep it simple and not try too hard to impress.
Foden has been one of the deadliest weapons in Guardiola's arsenal at the Etihad Stadium over the last few years. The Manchester City manager got hold of the attacker from the academy at a very young age and has managed to transform him into one of Europe's deadliest forwards.
However, it looks like their time together in Manchester is already numbered. Guardiola's contract is set to expire next year and rumors have started linking him with an impending exit.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Sport, Phil Foden admitted that it would be a very sad moment when Pep Guardiola finally reaches the end of the road at the Etihad Stadium.
“It would be really sad,” the 23-year-old explained. “I’ve not known any other thing apart from him, so it’ll be strange when he does go. I don’t want to think too much about it. I want to enjoy the things we’re doing now with him.”
The attacker went on to share the advice he got from the Manchester City boss this season, which has helped him develop his game.
“I feel like there’s other managers out there who complicate it a little bit. The best advice he gave me this season was just, ‘Don’t try and be Phil Foden in every action’, and I feel like that advice really went a long way," he continued. "I’ve been here for a long time now working with the manager.
“And I think now is the time for me to step up and try and be the man who’s going to score the goals. I knew what I was capable of doing this season, it’s so good to say that I’ve had a good season and I want to continue to play well," the Englishman added.
It is still unclear what Pep Guardiola's next step will be after runs down his contract with City next year. With his arch-rival Jurgen Klopp having departed the Premier League, the Spaniard could decide to follow suit.
Phil Foden and Pep Guardiola thrive with Manchester City this season
Phil Foden had arguably the best outing of his career this season, becoming the difference-maker for Manchester City when it really mattered. The 23-year-old ended the campaign with an impressive 27 goals and 12 assists to his name in 53 appearances across all competitions.
Pep Guardiola also made history this term. The Spaniard became the first manager to claim four consecutive Premier League titles after guiding the Cityzens to another title success - their sixth win in the last seven years.
Unfortunately, the Cityzens missed the chance to claim a domestic double as they lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final last weekend. They'll however be glad they held their nerves to defend their title.
