"They need match winners and experienced players" - Glen Johnson urges Chelsea to snub move for Euro 2024 star

Glen Johnson has urged Chelsea not to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao. The former defender believes that the Blues need an experienced star in the squad to bolster the attack.

Johnson said on BetFred that the Spanish winger is young and does not have the experience needed by the Blues:

“From what I’ve seen, he’s probably better than a few they’ve already got. As I’ve said before, Chelsea have so many youngsters and I believe they need more experience in the team. They need match winners and experienced players rather than an entire squad of young gems."

Johnson went on to add that the Blues need to get a player with Premier League experience and those that have won trophies and said:

"I don’t believe they need another young winger right now. Chelsea need players that have been around the Premier League for many years, that have won trophies, and know how to win. I think they’re already maxed out with youngsters if I’m being completely honest.”

Nico Williams played 37 matches across competitions for Bilbao last season and scored eight times and provided 19 assists. He has been an important player for Spain at the ongoing Euro 2024. He has been linked with a move to Barcelona as well, with Manchester City also keeping tabs.

Chelsea target told to stay at Athletic Bilbao by Julen Guerrero

Former Athletic Bilbao star Julen Guerrero has urged Nico Williams to stay at the Spanish club. He wants his former side to keep hold of their best players and not lose the winger.

He said via GhanaSoccerNet:

"I want him to stay at Athletic. I hope they have the best possible squad and that they always fight for great challenges. This year they won the cup and have entered Europe, these are undoubtedly ideal conditions for him and his football to continue developing in Bilbao."

He added:

"It's his decision. He will decide whoever calls him and whatever money they put in front of him, everything will depend on his wishes and whatever he decides must be completely respected. I hope he decides to stay at Athletic, progressing, seeking challenges and fulfilling dreams."

Reports suggest Williams has a €58 million release clause at Bilbao. Along with Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with the Spaniard.
