"They're very expectant and very arrogant about their chances" - Pundit makes claim about England as they play out draw in Euro 2024 clash
Republic of Ireland international winger James McClean has made a bold claim regarding England as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Denmark in Euro 2024 on Thursday, June 20. The Three Lions defeated Serbia 1-0 in their first group-stage game but were held by Denmark in their second game.
Kyle Walker's impressive burst of pace down the right flank helped England take 1-0 lead through Harry Kane (18') who slotted the deflected cross past Kasper Schmeichel with precision. However, the Three Lions never really managed to hit top gear and looked rather passive after their goal.
Denmark eventually equalized as Morten Hjulmand (34') scored a stunning long-range goal. Kasper Hjulmand's side did not concede too many chances after scoring the equalizer and managed to hold on to a draw.
James McClean, formerly of West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, blasted England for their arrogant approach on the pitch. The Wrexham star insisted that Gareth Southgate's side have too much ego for a team that has won just one World Cup and are yet win the Euros. McClean said, as quoted by Daniel Hussey on X (formerly Twitter):
"For a country that's won one World Cup and have never won the Euros, they're very expectant & very arrogant about their chances."
England will take on Slovenia in their final group-stage game in the Euros (June 25). They remain top of group C despite the draw against Denmark with four points from two games.
Gareth Southgate makes bold claim regarding England missing key player after their draw against Denmark in Euro 2024
England manager Gareth Southgate has lamented the absence of Kalvin Phillips following his side's 1-1 draw against Denmark in Euro 2024. Phillips has been a pivotal figure in Southgate's setup but his club form has seen him miss out on a place in the Three Lions' Euros squad.
Phillips struggled for playing time under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and joined West Ham United on loan in January. However, he has not managed to impress for the Hammers under David Moyes.
Following England's draw against Denmark in Euro 2024, Southgate admitted that his team are missing the former Leeds United skipper. He said, via Fabrizio Romano on X:
"We know we don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Philips. We're trying different things."
Phillips played a key role for Gareth Southgate's side during the last Euros where they finished runners-up.
