“They are strong and have the right mentality” - Fabio Capello predicts winners of Euro 2024
Former England manager Fabio Capello has backed France to win UEFA Euro 2024. He praised the gameplay and also believes they have the right mentality to go all the way.
France are arguably the overwhelming favorites to win the tournament this summer. With a squad boasting the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, N'Golo Kante, and more, they are well-stocked in every area of the pitch. Moreover, they have been in good form as well, having reached the FIFA World Cup final in 2022.
In a recent interview with Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, Fabio Capello was asked to name his favorites for Euro 2024. He said:
"France because they probably play the best football. They are strong and [have the right] mentality."
Les Bleus started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Austria on Monday, June 17. It wasn't an entirely convincing performance but Maximilian Wober's 38th-minute own goal secured all three points for Didier Deschamps' side.
France are placed in Group D alongside the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland. They will face leaders Netherlands next on Friday, June 21.
FFF president provides update on Kylian Mbappe's potential participation in the remainder of Euro 2024
During France's 1-0 win over Austria, their star man and captain Kylian Mbappe suffered a nose injury after he clashed with Kevin Danso. The attacker's nose looked in bad shape as it kept bleeding and he was subbed off.
A few reports suggested that Mbappe might need surgery and won't take part in Euro 2024 anymore. However, France Football Federation (FFF) president Phillippe Diallo has denied such claims but also refused to provide a strict timeline for the attacker's return. He told the media (via The Independent):
“The first responses were quite positive as there is no surgery planned for the moment. Now it is too soon to know if he will be able to play for the remainder of the tournament, or to provide a schedule for his situation.
“Obviously there were some medical examinations performed on site to know more about Kylian Mbappe’s nose and they made some conclusions pretty quickly. They tried to reduce the aftermath of his fracture, for him to be able to remain in the tournament."
He concluded:
“As I said, there is no surgery planned for the moment and we are still waiting for things to evolve later in order to know more about the conditions of his participation in the remainder of the tournament.”
France will next face the Netherlands on June 21 at Euro 2024 before their clash against Poland four days later.
