"This was an amazing opportunity, so I had to go for it" - Ex-Barcelona star explains why he joined Chelsea this summer
Chelsea forward Marc Guiu has opened up on his move to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona this summer. The 18-year-old Spaniard claimed he was convinced about the Blues' project after a conversation with new manager Enzo Maresca.
Guiu said (via The Daily Mail):
"He (Maresca) told me there was an amazing sporting project full of young talent, that he wanted me to be a part of it and that he had a lot of faith in me and my skills and capabilities."
"I think I'm ready (for the Premier League). We work very hard every day both on and off the pitch, on the physical aspect and the practical. So I think I'm ready to be on the pitch."
Facing the prospect of competing with Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson for the No. 9 role, reports suggested that Guiu might be sent out on loan for the 2024-25 season. Addressing those speculations, he said:
"I'm just focused on the pre-season tour, doing my best and that's what I can say."
"It was a tough decision (to leave Barcelona) but I always wanted to play in the Premier League and this was an amazing opportunity, so I had to go for it."
"It was not an issue with my contract. I've always dreamt of playing in the Premier League and Chelsea is a great club with a lot of history. I'm very happy I'm at the club. It's an amazing experience. I'm trying to do my best and get the best out of me."
Chelsea triggered Guiu's £5 million release clause earlier this summer to sign the youngster. He shot into fame for Barcelona after scoring just 23 seconds into his debut in a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
Guiu has been impressive in the pre-season for the Blues, starting three out of four games and scoring once.
Newcastle United looking to sign Chelsea star: Reports
Newcastle United have expressed interest in signing Chelsea winger Noni Madueke. According to Football Insider, the Magpies have earmarked the 22-year-old to bolster their attacking options.
The report also claims that the player is also open to the move. He made 34 appearances across all competitions last season, bagging eight goals and three assists.
Madueke joined Chelsea from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the 2023 winter transfer window for a reported €33 million. It remains to be seen if he has a future at Stamford Bridge under new manager Enzo Maresca.
