"This is on Enzo Maresca", "Don’t know what Enzo Fernandez does" - X reacts as Chelsea eliminated from EFL Cup after Newcastle loss
Several fans on X reacted after Chelsea were eliminated in Round 4 of the EFL Cup on Wednesday, October 30. A distraught Blues lineup was outclassed 2-0 by Newcastle United at St. James Park.
An early goal from Alexander Isak (23') in the first half and an own goal by Axel Disasi (26') sealed the win for the hosts. Despite recording 17 shots, the Blues had only four on target. Meanwhile, Newcastle recorded eight shots with only two on target, both of which resulted in goals.
Moreover, Chelsea's vertical game lacked penetration as the Newcastle United defense remained solid. However, while Newcastle conceded nine corners in the game, the visitors could not capitalize on a single set piece.
Fans took to X to react to Chelsea's loss, with many offering various opinions on what went wrong for the Blues. One user wrote:
"This is on Enzo Maresca."
"Mickey Mouse cup anyways," another fan jibed.
"SELL DISASTER AND BADIASHILE!!!!" another user exclaimed.
"Poor game management from the manager absolutely no ambition in this competition," another netizen opined.
One user criticized midfielder Enzo Fernandez, writing:
"Still don’t know what Enzo Fernandez does."
"I actually have no words," a person chimed in.
"The loss is on the coach. You can’t watch that terrible first half and didn’t think there’s need for substitution immediately. Even Pep had to make two substitutions after the half. This match is more important than the one we won during the weekend," a fan analysed.
"Badiashile and Disasi were playing against us," another user joked.
What's next for Chelsea?
Chelsea will next face Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on November 3. They are also competing in the UEFA Conference League and will face Armenian side Noah on November 7.
Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League table, with 17 points off nine games. They won five out of the nine games and lost twice. Two games ended in a stalemate. Meanwhile, the Blues are going strong in the Conference League, sitting atop the table with six points off two games.
Maresca's side will try its best to finish among the top four in the league to book a slot in the Champions League next season. Meanwhile, they also have a fair chance of winning the Conference League if they continue their form.
