"This guy is far worse than Sancho" - Fans slam Manchester United star as alleged incident involving him and Ten Hag comes to light
Manchester United fans were left annoyed after reports of a clash involving forward Antony and manager Erik ten Hag emerged. The Brazilian forward struggled for form and consistency and reportedly had a disagreement with the manager during the 2023-24 season.
Former Ajax star Antony was a high-profile addition to the Manchester United squad in the summer of 2022, joining the club for around €100 million. His signing was endorsed by Ten Hag, who had worked with him during his time at the Dutch club.
Antony struggled in his second season at Old Trafford, losing his place in the starting XI for most games to teenage star Alejandro Garnacho. When he did play, the manager often decided to shift his position as part of his in-game tactics.
In their impressive 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool in March, the 24-year-old was asked by the manager to play at left-back in the extra-time period. He reacted angrily on the pitch and had to be calmed down by teammate Marcus Rashford.
Erik ten Hag asked the Brazilian to play as left-back one more time in the season when his side hosted Arsenal in the closing weeks of the season. The Athletic reported that both times, the forward did not take the decision well, and the manager had to remind him who was in charge after both games.
Manchester United fans reacted on X to the report which emerged, criticizing the underperforming forward.
"This guy is far worse than Sancho," one fan wrote.
Another fan was left dismayed due to the forward's poor performance and apparent lack of respect.
"Can’t even do well as a RW and didn’t want to follow instructions, what has this club become🤦♂️"
A fan advised that the club sell the player immediately.
"The club should sell him ASAP!"
Another fan clarified that the forward had to follow the instructions of his manager, regardless of whatever he felt.
"😂 i mean I understand your a rw but if the manager needs you left back you do it you don’t question him show respect besides it’s not like you doing anything down that wing."
Antony ended the season with three goals and two assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. The forward managed just one goal and assist in the Premier League for the Red Devils.
Manchester United close in on first summer addition, personal terms agreed - Reports
Manchester United are reportedly nearing a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Independent claimed that the two parties had agreed on personal terms with the youngster. The England international is said to be the club's top target as they look to sign a new defender this summer.
The Red Devils are in need of defensive reinforcements after losing Raphael Varane on a free transfer following the end of his contract. They are willing to enter into negotiations with Everton for the 21-year-old, who is valued at around £70 million.
Branthwaite was part of the 33-man England squad selected for camping ahead of the Euro, but wasn't picked in the final squad. The youngster enjoyed an impressive season in the Premier League, winning his club's Young Player of the Season award.
