“This is why I say he’s the GOAT” - Piers Morgan points to ‘astounding’ Cristiano Ronaldo record as reason for him being greatest footballer ever
Journalist Piers Morgan hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as the GOAT after he was felicitated with a special award by UEFA for his incredible legacy in the Champions League.
Taking to X, Morgan wrote:
"Nobody will ever beat Ronaldo’s record of 140 goals in 183 Champions League matches. Just astounding, and this is why I say he’s the 🐐.."
This is not the first time Piers Morgan appreciated Ronaldo's achievements. The British journalist hailed the Portuguese star as the greatest of all time at various times in the past.
He also conducted several interviews with Ronaldo, including an exclusive one ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where the latter famously spoke about his grievances with his then-club Manchester United.
On August 29, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin honored Cristiano Ronaldo's legacy in the UEFA Champions League by presenting him with a special award for his remarkable feat.
In almost 20 years of playing in various clubs across Europe, Ronaldo won five UEFA Champions League titles (one with Manchester United and four with Real Madrid) in his career. The Portuguese icon remains the all-time highest goalscorer in the history of the tournament with 140 goals and 42 assists in 183 appearances.
When Piers Morgan hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as the 'best ever' over rival Lionel Messi
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, an X user asked Piers Morgan his take on the age old Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi debate. The British journalist did not hesitate to make his choice, and responded:
"I think Cristiano Ronaldo’s the best ever, Maradona 2nd, Messi 3rd (possibly 4th actually, behind R9)."
Shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo completed his transfer to Saudi Pro-League club Al-Nassr in December 2022, Morgan claimed Ronaldo's statements about Manchester United in his interview with him resulted in his transfer.
In an interview with Tatler, he reiterated his stance of choosing Ronaldo over Messi, and said:
"Thanks to the fall-out from our interview, Ronaldo signed the biggest transfer deal in football history, and is now the world's highest-paid athlete, at the age of 37."
He continued:
"He's also doing what he's done throughout his career, and which for me gives him the edge over Messi, and that's challenge himself in a new country, and new league, at a time when football in the Middle East is really taking off, as we saw at the Qatar World Cup where Morocco reached the semi-finals and Saudi Arabia beat the eventual winners, Messi's Argentina."
After Lionel Messi won the 2023 Ballon d'Or for his remarkable feat at the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Piers Morgan made massive claims about the award being unfair and biased towards Cristiano Ronaldo's longtime rival. The journalist added that Ronaldo should have won two more Ballon d'Ors while Messi should have had two less.
