Thomas Muller drops big retirement claim after Germany get knocked out of Euro 2024

Thomas Muller has hinted at his international retirement following Germany's elimination from Euro 2024. The hosts lost 2-1 to Spain in the quarter-finals at MHPArena in Stuttgart on Friday, July 5.

After a goalless first half, Spain's Dani Olmo broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. Germany found their equalizer through Florian Wirtz in the 89th minute as the match headed into extra time.

Mikel Merino then netted the winning goal in the 119th minute, thus breaking the host nation's hearts.

Germany received eight yellow cards while maintaining 52 percent ball possession and 84 percent pass accuracy. They also had five shots on target, two offsides, and five corners. Spain's right-back Dani Carvajal received a red card (two yellow cards) in the last minutes of the extra-time.

Following the crushing elimination from Euro 2024, Thomas Muller dropped a big retirement claim and told Sky Sport (via Fabrizio Romano):

"It’s very likely that this was my last game with Germany, yes."

Muller, who made his senior debut for Germany in 2010, has scored 45 goals and provided 41 assists in 131 appearances for his nation. He won the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

Thomas Muller posted an emotional message after Germany were eliminated from the Euro 2024 following their defeat to Spain. The Bayern Munich star posted pictures from the match on Instagram with the caption:

"I am proud to be a part of this team and above all proud to be a German. Thanks to everyone who cheered with us and were great hosts. Let's take this feeling into our daily lives right now in current times."

Germany have won the UEFA European Championship thrice in 1972, 1980, and 1996 while being runners-up in 1976, 1992, and 2008. They finished third in 1988, 2012, and 2016.
