“Tipped the scales in our favor” - Al-Nassr chief highlights significance of Cristiano Ronaldo signing for Saudi Pro League

Al-Nassr Executive General Director Marcelo Salazar has explained why the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo was so significant for the Saudi Pro League.

The five-time Ballon d'Or shocked the football community when he opted to join Al-Nassr as a free agent in January 2023. Ronaldo left behind European football, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with Al-Nassr reported to be worth a staggering £173 million a year.

Salazar was a key figure in Cristiano Ronaldo's move to the Saudi Pro League behind the scenes. The Brazilian reportedly convinced the Portugal icon to make the move. He also oversees Al-Nassr's transfers and has made key acquisitions since then, including Sadio Mane, Otavio, and Marcelo Brozovic.

In an exclusive interview with ProSport, Salazar was asked when the investment in Saudi football would stop. He replied:

“I don't know (laughs)... Who knows? We want to create a pole of interest here, and bringing in the Portuguese Ronaldo tipped the scales in our favor. We also bring players from the Premier League, plus the investments increase from one month to the next."

He added:

“And I don't mean only top footballers, but also stadiums. We want a World Championship here and I don't think that time is far away.”

Ronaldo's presence in the Saudi Pro League shifted the global spotlight on the competition, bringing in millions of new viewers. Saudi investment notably increased over the summer as the likes of Karim Benzema and Neymar chose to join the league as well.

Saudi football shows no signs of slowing down and could be further bolstered by the likes of Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, and Casemiro who have been linked with a summer move. Moreover, Saudi Arabia are expected to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, showing the progression they have made in the world of football.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in sensational form this season

Cristiano Ronaldo may be past his prime and in the twilight years of his career at the age of 38. However, he is still going strong for Al-Nassr this season, as seen in his performances to date.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 24 goals and registered 11 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season. He is currently the top scorer (20) and has the most assists (nine) in the Saudi Pro League, helping Al-Nassr challenge Al-Hilal for the title. His side are currently second in the table with 46 points from 19 games, seven points behind Al-Hilal.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. won't be back in action for a few more weeks due to the ongoing winter break. Barring any friendlies, they next face Al-Feiha in the first leg of the AFC Champions League Round of 16 on February 14.
