“To some, I seem arrogant” - Liverpool star likens his self-confidence to that of Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has likened himself to legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He claimed that his self-confidence is his habit even if it feels like arrogance to some.
The Reds signed Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 after paying out his release clause worth £60 million. He has made 45 appearances across competitions for the club, registering seven goals and four assists. He started the season really well but his form fell off towards the end.
In a recent interview, Szoboszlai was asked about his confidence, and he answered (via Anfield Sector):
“This is how I am, this is my habit. To some, I still seem arrogant. I don't call it arrogance, but self-confidence, as Ibrahimovic once said. You need self-confidence to be able to maintain this level, it is not so simple in everyday life.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was widely regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation. He had immense self-confidence, evident from his statements, which were perceived by many as arrogance as well.
He scored 496 goals and provided 203 assists in 827 games for clubs like Manchester United, AC Milan, and Barcelona, among others.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk on his future at the club
Virgil van Dijk's current contract with Liverpool expires in 2025. There were rumors that he could leave the club this summer with Jurgen Klopp's departure. However, the Dutchman has confirmed that he is open to contract extension talks whenever they take place.
Van Dijk said in an interview with De Telegraaf (via Liverpool ECHO):
"Of course (I am open to contract talks). You can always talk and we will see how that will go."
Van Dijk further spoke about his conversation with new Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his situation:
“I didn't know Arne Slot at all. This was the first conversation. That felt good. We discussed everything. About the selection, but also about my personal situation. But he also believes that the focus should now be entirely on the Dutch team.
“I didn't have the feeling that this was a farewell conversation and I think he also sees me in Liverpool 2.0. I got the feeling that he is happy that I am still there and will be there next season, so that I can help him where necessary. This allows us to achieve success on the field.”
Van Dijk, 32, has been one of the most important players for the Reds since arriving from Southampton for £75 million in January 2018. He has made 270 appearances, helping them win numerous trophies.
