Tottenham Hotspur legend Jan Vertonghen names surprise Ballon d'Or favorite after Euro 2024 final
Jan Vertonghen has backed Rodri to win the Ballon d'Or this year. The Tottenham Hotspur legend believes the midfielder has been the best player of the season and the EURO 2024 crown should seal it for him.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Vertonghen stated that the Ballon d'Or was 'confirmed' for Rodri. Amid reports of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr leading the way for the France Football award, the Belgian posted:
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente also called for Rodri to be handed the prestigious award this year. He was praising his players after the EURO 2024 win and said (via Tribal Football):
"Mikel is a sure value. We have won everything together. He never fails. He always gives and does things. He has known how to take advantage of Morata's work and the wear and tear suffered. Also Zubimendi replacing the best player in the world, please Rodri Ballon d'Or now!"
"This is football, but they are also values. They are an example for society. Ambition, desire to work... everything has led them to win something so important. We have been together for 44 days and these footballers are an example for society. Young people should see these players who give their lives away every day," he added.
Rodri also managed to win the Premier League with Manchester City this season and was named as the Player of the Tournament at EURO 2024.
Rodri wants to win the Ballon d'Or
Manchester City star Rodri has admitted that he wants to win the Ballon d'Or in his career. He said earlier this season (via beIN SPORTS):
"I know legendary midfielders have never achieved it, but I would love for a defensive midfielder like myself to win it. That would mean a lot, both for the recipient and for young players who want to play in that position, so they know they have the right to be recognized, even if they don't score goals or aren't particularly flashy in their game."
He added:
"He (Guardiola) knows everything about that position (defensive midfielder). Where I play, your teammates expect you to be their lifeline, with or without the ball, especially if the game is tense. Your teammates have to feel in your game: 'let's not panic, let's regain control of the game'."
Rodri is still not believed to be the favorite to win the Ballon d'Or this season. Lionel Messi won the award last year and has now won the Copa America, which could turn the tide once again.
