"Unc still got it performance", "Immense today" - Fans hail Manchester United veteran for showing in 0-0 Aston Villa draw
Manchester United fans have hailed Jonny Evans following a rock-solid performance against Aston Villa on Sunday, October 6, in the Premier League. The 36-year-old's efforts helped the Red Devils secure a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.
Evans' inclusion in the starting XI alongside Harry Maguire raised quite a few eyebrows when the team news was announced. Erik ten Hag opted to put Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt on the bench, with neither player managing to impress in the 3-3 draw against Porto in midweek.
Maguire and Evans were expected to struggle against a potent Aston Villa team who had secured a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in midweek. However, the veteran duo lived up to the challenge, with the Northern Irishman particularly impressive throughout the game.
Evans played the full 90 minutes for Manchester United, registering an 85.7% pass completion rate, and winning five aerial balls. He registered four tackles, three clearances, and one block. He was adjudged the Man of the Match at the end of the game.
Fans, understandably, were pleased with the player's efforts and took to social media to express their thoughts. One insisted that Evans had delivered a statement on the pitch. They wrote:
"Jonny Evans with a "Unc still got it" performance"
Another was full of praise for the Northern Irishman, adding:
"I had a pop about the centre backs before the game but Jonny Evans has been superb!"
Fans were generally full of praise for the Manchester United defender. One fan commented:
"Big Jonny Evans has been immense today#mufc"
Another posted:
"Sir General Jonny Evans 7/9 duels won, 4 tackles, 3 clearances. MOTM"
One fan hailed Evans' superb performance. They stated:
"jonny evans as player of the match - i wouldn’t have predicted that, but i’ll hold my hands up, fair play"
Another commented:
"jonny evans with a full 90 and potm. aging like fine wine"
Jonny Evans signed a one-year extension at Old Trafford over the summer and will be out of contract at the end of the season.
Will Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag during the international break?
Manchester United have a decision on their hands at the moment following a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Red Devils have won just three of their 11 games across competitions this season.
Erik ten Hag's team have one win, one loss, and three draws in their last five games. The Dutch manager has failed to get his act together, despite a very fruitful summer transfer window.
Manchester United's new minority owners INEOS have made multiple changes behind the scenes at Old Trafford since taking charge in February this year. While they opted to keep hold of Ten Hag over the summer, the manager has certainly tested the limits of their patience so far. With the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter available, the Red Devils could be tempted to consider Ten Hag's future during the international break.
