Veteran Manchester United star signs 1-year contract extension with the club
Manchester United have tied down veteran keeper Tom Heaton with a new one-year deal. The Red Devils have announced the news of the 38-year-old committing to the club for another year on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Heaton joined Manchester United for the second time from Aston Villa in 2021 and has served as the club's second and third-choice keeper. He came through the youth ranks of the Red Devils but left in 2010 for Cardiff City without making a single senior appearance.
The veteran Englishman is currently training with the England squad although he is not a part of the official squad. Since his switch to Old Trafford in 2021, Heaton has made only three appearances without conceding a single goal.
Heaton did not make a single appearance for Manchester United last season. His last appearance for the Red Devils was in the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win over Nottingham Forest in February 2023.
The veteran keeper formerly played for the likes of Cardiff City, Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa. Heaton spent the prime years of his career at Burnley making 200 appearances for the Lancashire club.
Heaton has also been capped thrice for England keeping one clean sheet in the process. Manchester United have Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir in their ranks ahead of Tom Heaton in the pecking order.
Manchester United manager holds private chat with Serie A star: Reports
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly held a private chat with Bologna attacker Joshua Zirkzee. As reported by Express Sport, the Red Devils are pushing forward to sign the Dutchman following the appointment of Dan Ashworth as the new sporting director.
Zirkzee's contract with Bologna contains an attractive release clause of just £34 million, which became active on July 1. The 23-year-old is currently on international duty with the Netherlands in Euro 2024.
United parted ways with Anthony Martial after his contract expired this summer and Zirkzee is reportedly eyed as the replacement. Ten Hag sees his compatriot as someone who can compete with Rasmus Hojlund for a place.
Zirkzee was formerly in the ranks of Bayern Munich but made only 17 senior appearances for the Bundesliga giants. The Dutchman has made a name for himself since his move to Bologna in 2022.
He scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 37 games across competitions last season as Thiago Motta's side secured a fifth-placed finish in Serie A. They qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the 2024-25 season.
