Messi is Argentina's all-time highest goalscorer with 108 goals in 183 appearances. The Inter Miami superstar, who made his senior international debut in 2005, also has 58 assists to his name. He helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup after guiding the nation to Copa America glory in 2021.
Lionel Messi hoping for a belated birthday present when Argentina face Chile
Lionel Messi will hope to celebrate his 37th birthday in style when Argentina face Chile at the MetLife Stadium on Wednesday, June 26. A win would ensure La Albiceleste progress to the knockout rounds of Copa America 2024.
The defending champions started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada, with Julian Alvarez (49') and Lautaro Martinez (88') finding the back of the net.
Messi, who provided an assist against Canada, has been in fine form for Inter Miami this season. He has scored 14 goals and set up 11 more in 15 appearances in all competitions for the MLS outfit.
This might well be the former Paris Saint-Germain star's last major international tournament. And if that is indeed the case, he would be keen to bow out on a high.
Messi boasts a fine record in Copa America, having scored 13 goals and providing 18 assists in 35 games. He has won the continental competition once when Argentina lifted the trophy in 2021.
