Wayne Rooney names England player he'd have dropped to include Jack Grealish in Euro 2024 squad

Wayne Rooney has said that he would have dropped Jarrod Bowen to take Jack Grealish to EURO 2024. He believes that England have enough players for the right wing and needed the Manchester City star in their squad.

On The Overlap, Rooney said that he sees Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka fighting for the right-wing spot, so boss Gareth Southgate need not have picked Bowen. Explaining why Grealish should have been in the squad instead of the West Ham United star, Rooney said:

"Grealish, I would have taken him. Bowen on the right, they have Saka, Cole Palmer, Foden could play out there. I would have taken Grealish instead of Bowen."

Jack Grealish, who was dropped from England's preliminary EURO 2024 squad, had a tough 2023-24 season, as he was injured most of the time. He managed just 2114 minutes across competitions for Manchester City, scoring thrice and assisting as many times.

Wayne Rooney concerned about England's Trent Alexander-Arnold at EURO 2024

Wayne Rooney has said that he's not a fan of Gareth Southgate's decision to move Trent Alexander-Arnold to midfield. He doesn't think the Liverpool star is good enough defensively and will be exposed at EURO 2024.

Rooney said on The Overlap:

"I think he'll (Southgate) go with Trent. I think he's probably the most gifted player with the ball at his feet we've got. Defensively, he's all over the place. He can't defend.
"I wouldn't have him anywhere near the middle of the pitch. I'd have no problem with playing him here (at right-back). I think in here (midfield), I wouldn't have him anywhere near there. And I love Trent, actually. I think on the ball, the stuff he can do, no one else can do it."

He added:

"100%, (if) we go into the quarter-finals and we're playing France, Trent is not playing in midfield. For me, I don't think Gareth trusts him enough to play him in midfield. And he has his doubts, the same way I do, about playing midfield.
"That's when you're going to see (Conor) Gallagher or (Kobbie) Mainoo in there. I don't think he trusts Trent defensively, which I think he's right to. In the games where you think you're going to dominate possession, I think you probably will see him in there."

England begin their EURO 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday (June 16).
