“We had conversations about that” - Ex-Arsenal hero Santi Cazorla confirms talks with Arteta to return to Emirates

Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has revealed that he has discussed a potential return to the Emirates Stadium with Gunners manager Mikel Arteta. The 39-year-old was arguably one of the best players at the north London club during his six-year stint, playing 180 games.

After leaving Arsenal, he moved to Villarreal again, where he played a grand total of 330 games before leaving for Qatar. Currently playing for Real Oviedo, Cazorla told Sky Sports (via Metro):

"I have a very special affection for Arsenal. I spent six wonderful years there and I know how much all the people love me there. Of course, I was fortunate to share a dressing room with Mikel Arteta and now he is the manager.
"We had conversations about that but right now I am not focused on anything other than contributing to this club, Oviedo, and continuing to enjoy football as a player. After that, we will see what the future holds for me."

Cazorla finished:

"It is clear that Arsenal is a club that has always left the door open to me to return. But right now, I have enough on my mind with the play-offs and trying to enjoy the last days of my playing career."

Cazorla scored an impressive 29 goals and provided 44 assists for Arsenal, winning the FA Cup twice with the north London outfit.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has openly stated his wish to add Cazorla to his coaching staff

Mikel Arteta has enjoyed an impressive career with Arsenal, leading them to become one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League. The manager has spoken about a coaching future for Santi Cazorla and said the following about the 39-year-old earlier in April (via Football365):

"Depending on the role. You know my sympathy for Santi. We used to get on really, really well. I think he had an unbelievable energy that, as a coaching staff to have someone like that, that can trust with his knowledge, but his energy as well to the team. I think it’s going to be valid."

The Gunners have come second in the Premier League for a second consecutive time, and they will be looking to get past Pep Guardiola and Manchester City to win next season. Getting Cazorla into the backroom will certainly be a bonus to the club's growing plans.
