“We are going to be gas lit with explanations” - Arsenal legend sends strong message about Bukayo Saka criticism after England loss
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has come in support of Bukayo Saka after the Three Lions' 0-1 defeat to Iceland on June 7.
Gareth Southgate's team's preparation ended in an unwanted manner. Saka bore the brunt of the criticism despite coming on in the 65th minute. Apart from Saka, Kobbie Mainoo has also faced criticism.
Wright has now aimed a shot at the critics. The consensus is that the black players are receiving undue criticism. Wright has come to Saka's defense. He quoted a tweet, writing:
"Now more than ever let's getbbehind and support these young lads. We can all see what's happening & who's being set up to be the face of the defeat. We are going to be gas lit with explanations & justifications, but those deciding who goes on the back pages know what they're doing. Let's keep our energies focused on giving these players pure love & support throughout the tournament."
Iceland capitalized on an error from Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and got the lead. England were unable to find a breakthrough. The defeat ahead of the Euros has gotten fans worried. However, Wright has pointed out that the criticisms have been pointed in the wrong direction.
Bukayo Saka heads into the Euros after a brilliant season with Arsenal
Bukayo Saka was one of the Premier League's best players during the 2023-24 season. He enjoyed a stellar overall campaign with Arsenal and was one of their main protagonists.
Saka scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists in 47 appearances across competitions. He scored 16 goals and provided nine assists in 35 Premier League games.
Saka is one of England's main players and is expected to be a starter at the Euros. Undue criticism, though, could hinder the player's confidence. Considering Saka's quality, having him at his best is beneficial to England.
England have Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia in their group. They start their journey in Group C on June 16 against Serbia. Gareth Southgate's side were runner-ups at Euro 2020.
