"We cannot ignore them" - Portugal manager Roberto Martinez names 6 teams as top contenders to win Euro 2024

Portugal national team manager Roberto Martinez believes his side is one of six favorites for the Euro 2024 title. The Spanish tactician has a strong squad, but was realistic about his team's chances in Germany.

The former Belgium boss will hope his side can sail through their group unscathed and secure a favorable opponent in the next round. They are in Group F alongside Czech Republic, Georgia, and Turkey.

During an interview with AS, Martinez listed the nations expected to perform well at the tournament in Germany. He said:

"There are several teams that have players who are used to fighting for all the titles: France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal... we cannot ignore them... gives us our responsibility to be in that lot."

Roberto Martinez served as the Belgium manager from 2016 to December 2022, leading one of the most talented squads in the Red Devils' history. Despite some impressive performances in major international tournaments, he couldn't guide Belgium to a trophy and will be hoping for a change of fortunes with Portugal.

Roberto Martinez also stated that he is content with the team at his disposal heading into Euro 2024. Portugal will be led by talisman and captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been plying his trade in Saudi Arabia since the start of 2023.

In the aforementioned interview, Martinez was asked about the lack of playing time some of his players like Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos have had in the 2023-24 season. He said in response:

"There is no perfect situation. It is impossible to have players who have won everything and who on top of that come fresh to the national team. If they played, they're tired. If they didn't play, they lack joy. The important thing is that all footballers fit in and be happy. We are facing a dream that we all had since we were little. I am more concerned about the players we have lost or who have been injured. Choosing the call is the only bad moment of a selector."

Portugal will begin their Euro 2024 campaign against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, June 18, at the Red Bull Arena. They will then face Turkey on Saturday, June 22, and end their group stage run against Georgia on Wednesday, June 26.
