“We were a little bit angry” - Alejandro Garnacho shares what Ten Hag told fuming Manchester United stars at half-time before win over Brentford
Alejandro Garnacho has admitted that Manchester United players were angry at conceding the goal late in the first half to Brentford on October 19. He claims that they were encouraged by Erik ten Hag, who told them they needed to fight for each other.
Speaking to the media after the 2-1 Premier League win over Brentford, Garnacho said that Manchester United had a good game at Old Trafford. He added that the fans deserved to celebrate the win after the Red Devils went without a win in October. He said via Centre Devils:
"I think we played a good game. We went 1-0 down but we kept pushing. A very important and good game, the fans deserve a win now. We were a little bit angry because we were with 10 players and out of time a bit, and then we conceded.
"But the manager said we have to keep playing how we were, we have to fight for each other. I missed two big chances in the first half, but I came to them with the same mentality. I shoot [the third] first-time and I score, so I'm happy."
Ethan Pinnock scored for Brentford in the first-half stoppage time. Alejandro Garnacho then scored to pull Manchester United level after they fell behind just before halftime. The Argentine's goal came just over a minute after the second half started and Rasmus Hojlund sealed the win with a neat finish in the 62nd minute.
Erik ten Hag on Manchester United's win over Brentford
Erik ten Hag has revealed that he told the Manchester United players that they needed to score goals ahead of the match. He admitted in his pre-match press conference that it was their biggest issue on the pitch and believes that the players responded well.
He said via Centre Devils:
"We said before the game we have to score and we made two brilliant goals. I saw very good character from this team. Determined to win after a big setback. Really enjoyed it and great football. Of course we were angry after conceding. We enjoy this for 24 hours and then we move on.
"Only poor game was against Tottenham when we were reduced to 10 men. All the other games we showed some character and fighting spirit which we will build on. Don't overrate this result it's just a win. We have to win every game."
Manchester United have now scored seven goals in eight league games this season. They moved to 10th place on the Premier League table after picking up their third win of the season. The Red Devils could slip to 11th if Nottingham Forest get a point against Crystal Palace on Monday night.
