"We'll have to see" - Manchester United force Manuel Ugarte to make major U-turn after previously insisting he wanted to stay at PSG
Manchester United target Manuel Ugarte was adamant he wanted to stay at PSG when speaking at the end of last season. The Uruguayan midfielder is being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Ugarte has agreed on personal terms with United over a transfer. He wants to join the Red Devils despite a lack of UEFA Champions League football.
This means Manchester United has persuaded Ugarte, 23, to backtrack from his initial stance on his future. He stated his intentions to remain at the Parc des Princes earlier this year (via Manchester Evening News):
"I would love to [stay at PSG]. We’ll have to see. For now, I’m here and enjoying the end of the season."
Manuel Ugarte signed a four-year contract with PSG from Sporting CP last summer for €60 million. He made a promising start in the French capital but faltered as the season progressed.
The 22-cap Uruguay international made 37 appearances across competitions, posting three assists. The Parisians were reportedly disappointed with the holding midfielder, believing he wasn't the player they expected when signed.
Manchester United are keen on Ugarte as they look to strengthen their midfield. He could come in as Casemiro's replacement with the veteran Brazilian linked with a departure. Scott McTominay is also a candidate to leave should a deal for the Uruguayan come to fruition.
Manuel Ugarte reportedly informs PSG he wants to join Manchester United
Romano reports that Manuel Ugarte has told PSG he wants to join Manchester United this summer. This is a significant development in the transfer saga, as his club now knows he wants to leave the Parc des Princes.
The two European giants are yet to agree on a fee for Ugarte but a deal could commence given the Ligue 1 club are keen to offload. The Parisians have reportedly set their sights on Benfica's Joao Neves, the Portuguese midfielder who is being considered as Ugarte's replacement.
Manuel Ugarte may have received criticism during his time at PSG, but his stock was high upon his arrival. He impressed at Sporting with his aggressiveness and defensive capabilities, and he could suit Premier League football at Manchester United.
The Red Devils looked vulnerable in midfield last season, with Kobbie Mainoo the only shining light in central midfield. He could use a more defensively sound midfield partner.
