"We are still in contact with Manchester United" - Serie A club director insists they are in negotiations to sign Mason Greenwood

Lazio chief Angelo Fabiani claimed the Serie A club is still in negotiations with Manchester United regarding signing Mason Greenwood. Fabiani's comments come amid growing reports that Olympique de Marseille have reached an agreement with the Red Devils regarding Greenwood's transfer.

Greenwood, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan at La Liga club Getafe, is set for a permanent move away from Old Trafford. The English attacker had a good season last term and was named Getafe's Player of the Season.

Fabiani told Italian media that Lazio are in contact with United regarding a transfer. He said (via TuttoMercatoWeb):

"We were already dealing with him last year, we are still in contact with Manchester United. There are still hassle but this is part of the football market, the devil's advice is eaten by the fox and I am not a fox."

Fabiani, though, avoided questions about his certainty to sign Greenwood. Despite growing reports that Marseille are the front-runners to land Greenwood, negotiations have reportedly hit a stumbling block after the French city's mayor's recent comments about the transfer.

Marseille mayor urges Ligue 1 side not to sign Mason Greenwood

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan opposed the idea of Olympique de Marseille signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United. Payan's stance comes from the alleged r*pe, sexual assault, controlling and coercive behavior changes against Greenwood that date back to 2022.

Although Greenwood was acquitted of the charges pressed by his fiance, Harriet Robson, Payan claimed he'd ask Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria to not sign the forward. He told RMC (via BBC):

"I don't want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable."

As per BBC, Greenwood had a short meeting with United's officials on Monday where he was informed that the club's stance remained the same, the player needs to leave in the summer.
