"We've done amazing things together" - Viktor Gyokeres praises new Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim after Manchester City UCL thrashing
Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres opened up on Ruben Amorim's move to Manchester United after their win over Manchester City on Tuesday, November 5. They beat the Cityzens 4-1 at Estadio Jose Alvalade in the UEFA Champions League league stage.
Phil Foden opened the scoring for Manchester City in the fourth minute. Viktor Gyokeres then restored parity in the 38th minute before Maximiliano Araujo made it 2-1 for Sporting in the 46th minute. Gyokeres added another three minutes later from the penalty spot before completing his hat-trick via another penalty in the 80th minute.
After the game, the Swedish striker shared his thoughts on Amorim's impending move to Manchester United, saying (via Mirror):
"We've done amazing things together. We will miss him and the other guys in the staff who will leave. We have to look forward and attack the next challenge ahead of us."
Amorim has been appointed the new United manager following Erik ten Hag's sacking on October 28. He will start his tenure at Old Trafford on November 11. His final match in charge of Sporting CP will be away against FC Braga in the Liga Portugal on Sunday, November 10.
Viktor Gyokeres on joining Ruben Amorim at Manchester United
With Ruben Amorim set to join Manchester United, a couple of his players from Sporting CP have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford. They include Geovany Quenda and Viktor Gyokeres. The latter recently shared his thoughts on potentially joining the Portuguese manager at United and said:
"Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know. I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best."
Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific strikers in European football since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City last summer. He's scored 66 goals and provided 19 assists in 67 games across competitions. He's been in brilliant form this season as well, recording 23 goals and four assists in 17 games across competitions.
On the other hand, Manchester United have struggled to score this season. They have scored just nine goals in 10 Premier League games, with only Crystal Palace (8) and Southampton (7) scoring fewer. Hence, they could be tempted to bring in a prolific striker like Gyokeres.
The Sweden international's contract with Sporting expires in 2028. As per journalist Florian Plettenberg, he could leave the club for around €60-70 million next summer.
